About

Johanna Block is a writer and film director based in New York City. Starting her artistic journey as a dancer, Johanna discovered film in her early twenties and never looked back. She went on to direct two short films, WAIT (2018) and WATERFALL (2019). During the Pandemic, Johanna directed her first feature, an experimental dance film, WHO AM I. Who Am I stars Brandon Flynn, Hari Nef, Alisha Boe, Odessa A’zion, Gideon Adlon, Otmara Marrero, and more. WHO AM I is composed of nine vignettes and follows each actor embodying an aspect of the human condition - Loneliness, OCD, Sexuality, Humor, Joy, Depression, Curiosity, Fear, and Anxiety. Each installment has a different composer tackling the sonic manifestation of each condition such as Dan Romer, Alex Mansour, Luka Kloser, Alec Sievern, Sam Ostroff, and more.

The ensemble cast has built personal relationships and is attached to Johanna's narrative feature, MAYBE NEXT LIFE, set to shoot in Italy summer of 2024. Johanna has also written two episodes for the podcast series Day by Day, AT THE PEAK OF IT ALL, starring Josephine Langford and UNSPOKEN TRUTH, starring Katherine McNamara, both tackling mental health topics during COVID. Along with making successful strides in the Independent film scene, Johanna directs music videos for various artists and commercials.

Johanna's unique eye when choreographing emotions on film allows the audience to tap deeper into their senses and remind everyone they are not alone.
